DESCRIPTION:Sometimes philanthropy is absolutely simple — in the best sense of the
term. Canines for Disabled Kids provides working dogs to help children
with disabilities live a little more independently, as all children
want to do as they grow and mature. Spun-off from the well-known NEADS
program (Cat. '97,
National Education for Assistance Dog
Services), CDK works with children as young as six (most programs
begin at age 12) who have autism, Down's syndrome, or other
developmental and physical disabilities. The dogs pick up dropped
pencils, help a child to stand, push open a door — simple tasks that
can in so many instances and ways mean the difference between
dependence and independence. They are also warm, loyal, 24-hour
companions and playmates for these other-wise lonely children who
cannot participate in so many activities other kids enjoy. It doesn't
get much simpler than that, and you can help make it happen.
