DESCRIPTION:

NCMC was created in 1986, after Prop 2 had dismantled most arts education in public schools, to replace what was lost. This is the only local organization in the region collaborating with the public schools on music education. From its humble start with two teachers and a handful of children in a local living room, NCMC today has a professional faculty of 45, offering instruction in all instruments of the orchestra plus voice. It also offers choral and ensemble opportunities, a Music for the Young Child program and music therapy for children with autism. NCMC provides scholarship assistance to those in need. Since 1988, its enrollment has grown by 65%, and for the excellence and success of these outreach programs, NCMC received the 2002 "Distinguished Community Arts Institution Award" from the Massachusetts Alliance for Arts Education.

Cutbacks in government funding have hurt this program. In an area where 24% of public school students qualify for free and reduced lunches, the demand for scholarships is great and growing. Promised support from the Commonwealth has been rescinded, and in this economy corporate partners have had to limit or reduce their support as well. To keep the music playing, they need you.
