DESCRIPTION:

Trust philanthropy to help the American justice system operate well, especially under stress. Founded in 1980 and Boston based, this technical assistance project of the National Lawyers Guild helps everyone in the legal profession dealing with immigrants--e.g., the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) has special provisions relating to non-citizen perpetrators and victims; authoritative guidance for everyone involved--lawyers and litigants – is needed; who will provide it? Philanthropy, that’s who--through N.I.P., which was cited in a Ford Foundation study as a leading authority on the issue of domestic violence and immigrant women. In 2002, the Project responded to 800 requests for technical assistance regarding VAWA. Since 9/11, the job has been enormously complicated and urgently intensified. N.I.P. was there, and ready, distributing accurate information on issues and litigations. It authored the leading treatise on the immigration consequences of criminal conduct, Immigration Law and Crimes. According to a recent study funded by the Ford Foundation, N.I.P. ranks first among all small national organizations, and fourth among all national organizations regardless of size (whose budgets are far larger), as the authority most often cited for its usefulness in the field of immigration law. If you care about these issues, this is your most cost-effective philanthropic investment.
