Boston Theatre Works CONTACT:31 St James Street #360 Boston, MA 02116 617-728-4321 Jason Southerland, artistic director
DESCRIPTION:BTW was founded in 1998 to nurture new playwrights, promote diversity, and attract new audiences to the theatre. Already in six years it has won three Elliot Norton Awards: two for outstanding productions, one for set design. In a typical season, BTW presents two works by emerging writers, a New England premiere of by an established playwright, and a reexamination of a classic for its contemporary relevance. African-American and Hispanic playwrights are welcomed, and almost half of its staged plays have been written by women—Tony Award winner Emily Mann chose to rework her play, Meshugah, with BTW before taking it to Off-Broadway. To attract new audiences, BTW remains committed to lower ticket prices—deeply discounted student matinees, free tickets for designated organizations and schools, neighborhood-based public readings, and a free “Sundays @ 7” series. So that young people can see the relevance of theater to their lives, BTW designs curricula and distributes them to teachers, and sends actors into classrooms. So here you have a theatre company really working in Boston; this is your opportunity to work with them. (2004: CULTURE: Arts: Performing: Theatre and Film)
