DESCRIPTION:

New choreography is how dance develops, but how do new choreographers develop? With incredible difficulty — given the wide variety of skills needed and the challenges of developing them as a young and unknown artist. The Moving Laboratory was founded in 2001 to address this problem as a new kind of dance institution — a collaborative “incubator for choreographers.” Three exceptionally talented, award-winning, entrepreneurial dancer-choreographers decided to work intensively together to help emerging choreographers sharpen and strengthen their creative visions and technical skills as artists, administrators, and institution builders. They incorporated this charity to become eligible for grants, and got off to a flying start with a $50,000 highly competitive award from Johnny Walker, Inc. They also won a prize from the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, and received positive notices and reviews in local and national press. By joining forces they have created a secure environment for experiment, sharing tasks and feedback, and by performing both together and individually, they have taught each other and acceded to opportunities and resources that would be unobtainable separately. The Lab is a bold experiment in arts philanthropy; you can be a part of it.
