DESCRIPTION:This is the 10th anniversary of the Boston City Singers which, since 1995, has been “Uniting Boston’s Neighborhoods Through Song,” and “inspiring self-development, celebrating diversity and fostering goodwill through music.” BCS provides 210 Boston children, ages six to 18, with serious musical training — vocal and ear training, sight-reading skills and the disciplines of artistic performance, in styles ranging from classical to traditional folk to jazz and world music. The quality of its work is high, and its spirit is delightful; BCS annually accepts about 25 invitations to perform throughout New England (including First Night) and for the first time in July 2005, internationally at the Niagara International Music Festival. Also in this past year, BCS co-commissioned its first major composition, for treble chorus: “I Will Ride,” the story of Paul Revere. While modest tuition helps cover costs, more than half the children are on scholarships, and BCS relies on grants, donations and lots of volunteer time to make ends meet. Here is an organization that would be great fun to support — are you interested? (2005: CULTURE: Arts: Community)
