DESCRIPTION:

Homelessness and recidivism are far too common among released prison inmates. To do something about this, a few citizens in 1988 created Dismas House, where each year 40-50 ex-prisoners gain life skills through intensive, practical programs and group therapy in an urban neighborhood-based home. Of the residents who entered Dismas in 2001, 74% had stabilized, staying off the streets and out of prison three years later. DH has received a Best Practice citation from the Urban Institute, and a Best Local charity award in a survey by the Worcester Phoenix. Based on this success, Dismas is now expanding. Working with the Worcester County House of Corrections and the Massachusetts Parole Board, DH’s Almost Home project will transform a vacant farmhouse and its land into a residential organic farm to help prepare former prisoners for life outside. Funding for the site has been secured, but DH needs help raising another $100,000 in startup costs for furnishings, a fire suppression system, limited renovations and materials.
