DESCRIPTION:The turn of the 20th century saw the birth of three artist colonies in the U.S.: Yaddo (1900), MacDowell (1907); and Provincetown (1900). The idea was that when birds of these fine feathers flocked together, outside urban centers in a kind of utopian dream, even greater art would result—and it has. Provincetown Arts has been published annually since 1985 to celebrate and cultivate Provincetown’s contributions to the arts. Drawing on Provincetown’s rich history in art, theater, and writing, PA publishes a luxuriant mix of essays, fiction, interviews, performance pieces, poetry, profiles, reporting, reviews, and visual features. In only 21 years, they have already won a Pushcart Prize, first prizes for Editorial Content and Design from American Literary Magazine, as well as various awards from Best American Essays, Best American Movie Writing, Best American Poetry, and Best American Short Stories. Their roster of contributors includes Norman Mailer, Annie Dillard, Karen Finley, Mary Oliver, John Waters, Sebastian Junger, Stanley Kunitz and many others. They manage to do all this on an extremely trim budget backed by a readership of 34,000 nationwide, strong advertising support for that market, and charitable contributions. You can join their distinguished company as a patron. (2006: CULTURE: Arts: Visual, Literary and Crafts)
