DESCRIPTION:

The Shakers were perfectionists, in their lives, work, and communities, because they believed that the end of “the world” was at hand—that the “Kingdom of Heaven” was coming—not cataclysmically with a clap of thunder, but gradually, by the conversion of individual souls, starting with their own. They tried to seed America with islands of perfection that would attract growing numbers of souls seeking salvation: “When the love of God is present, it is heaven everywhere.” Today there are only four Shakers still alive (actually, in Maine), but philanthropy is keeping their spirit alive and glowing. HSV was formed in 1960 by a few Berkshire County residents, to conserve this breathtakingly beautiful Shaker Village—20 historic buildings, on farm, field, and woodland. This is the nation’s best-known, -preserved, and -interpreted example of Shaker culture, exploring its modern relevance— as a “City of Peace” in perfect community, equality, craftsmanship, and sustainable agriculture, in harmony with nature. HSV receives 70,000 visitors annually, including 2,500 schoolchildren, and reaches countless more worldwide, on its website. “Tho’ I could speak all human tongues,/ And those of the angelic throngs,…Without the gift of charity,/ A tinkling cymbal I should be….” Now let your charity join theirs, and help spread the love.
