DESCRIPTION:

HBTPP began in 1978 as a home-tutoring program for pregnant teens, run by the Pittsfield School System. As demand increased, it evolved to a more economical centralized and broader program, to a fully-developed alternative educational facility with certified on-site nursery, and individualized socialservice case management. In 1986 it was incorporated, with the mission to provide comprehensive support for the educational, health, and social service needs of pregnant and parenting teens and their babies, as they move on to their next stage in life—high school graduation or GED, college, career training or the job market. A caseworker creates and monitors customized plans for each student and her baby. Every morning a bus takes them to HBTPP, where from 8:15-2:00 the students are taught by tutors supplied by the Pittsfield Public School System, while their infants are cared for in the nursery. The results of this program are impressive: in the 2006-07 school year, 88% of the teen participants either graduated from high school, obtained their GED, or rejoined their secondary schools at the next grade-level. The School System pays for the busing and the tutors, and HBTPP collaborates with other agencies for social services. Donations are therefore highly leveraged, and yours are needed.
